Built-Up Roof (BUR) Membranes
This type of roofing system has been in use for over 100 years in our country and you may know them as “tar and gravel” roofs. They are comprised of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics, which then make up the finished membrane. Usually, asphalt, coal tar, or cold-applied adhesive is used for the bitumen. The asphalt and coal tar are heated first in a kettle or tanker, while cold-applied adhesives don’t need to be. They are then applied by mop or mechanical spreader. Surfacing for BURs usually include aggregate (like grave, slag, or mineral granules), glass fiber, or mineral-surfaced cap sheets, hot asphalt mopped over, aluminum coatings, or elastomeric coatings.
Metal Panel Roof Systems
This type of roofing is used for low-slope roofs since they have hydrostatic characteristics. This means that metal panel roof systems are good as water barriers. They are usually designed to resist water at laps and other joints. They are strong enough to span supporting members. Most of the time, this type of roofing system is used over spaced structural supports without being supported by a solid roof deck.
Single-Ply Membranes
Single-ply membranes are factory-manufactured sheet membranes that are either thermoplastic or thermoset. Thermoplastic materials can be repeatedly softened while thermoset materials cannot. This roofing type is produced by calendaring, extruding, or spread coating. They can be installed fully adhered, mechanically attached, or held down with ballast. They usually do not receive surfacing.
Polymer-Modified Bitumen Sheet Membrane
Polymer-modified bitumen (MB) sheet membranes were first developed in Europe in the 1960s and made their way to the United States in the 1970s. They are made up of reinforcing fabrics, which carry the hot polymer-modified bitumen while they are manufactured into a roll material. Just like with BUR membranes, MB roof system membranes also have multiple layers. The two types of MB roofing membranes are SBS and APP. The general difference is that APP modifiers give a plastic quality to asphalt while SBS modifiers give a rubber quality. Surfacing for this type of membrane includes aggregate surfacing, mineral surfacing, metal foil-laminate surfacing, and smooth liquid-applied surfacing.
Spray Polyurethane Foam-Based (SPF) Roof Systems
This roofing type is made by mixing and spraying a two-component liquid. Because of this, it can be installed in varying thicknesses, after which a protective surfacing is applied on top.
